Moana Review: Disney Delivers a Fresh Take Instead of a Generic Remake

Moana (2016) is an animated movie, and its sequel, Moana 2 (2024), was released and became immensely popular; however, if you don’t enjoy animated films, there is also Moana (2026)—a live-action movie released recently that is both live-action and entertaining.

If you haven’t seen the animated version yet, you are missing out on an absolute gem. This adventure-fantasy film, featuring supernatural elements, is truly outstanding. While its animation and VFX are excellent, I cannot help but compare it to the animated version; I personally preferred the animated version over the live-action one, and for that reason, I would rate the animated version higher.

Story of Moana (2026)

Moana is a girl who lives on the island of Motunui. She is determined to ensure the safety of her people. Her father forbids her from venturing into the ocean—a restriction stemming from a specific reason that is revealed in the movie. Despite her father’s objections, she sets out on an ocean voyage without telling him, driven by the need to save Motunui and find Maui, a figure possessing divine powers. Revealing what happens next would constitute a spoiler, so you will have to watch the movie to find out. Why does she need to find Maui? What role does Maui play once they meet? You will have to watch the film to discover all of this.

Final verdict

Just recently, we watched the live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon (2025); prior to that, we saw live-action adaptations of The Lion King (2019)—and I must say, the live-action versions were excellent. Now, the live-action movie Moana (2026) is set for release on July 10, 2026, adapting the story from the two previous animated versions.

I have watched both animated versions of the movie, and based on that, I feel this live-action adaptation wasn’t really necessary; however, for anyone who hasn’t seen the animated versions, this could prove to be a fantastic film. It is a musical drama featuring light, background songs that accompany every emotion.

When it comes to the VFX, it is in a league of its own; the visuals are absolutely crystal clear and impressive. I would describe the VFX in this movie as outstanding, further cementing Disney+’s dominance in the realm of movies. The rating is slightly lower due to it being a scene-for-scene copy, but for a first-time viewer, it offers a great experience. The movie holds a rating of 5.7, based on votes from over 5,500 people.

This film spans the comedy, musical, fantasy, and adventure genres and was released worldwide on July 10, 2026. Directed by Thomas Kail, the movie treats viewers to beautiful visuals.

This film is produced by Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Beau Flynn, and Hiram Garcia. It is written by Jared Bush and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

In this movie, Catherine Laga’aia as Moana and Dwayne Johnson as the demigod Maui—alongside John Tui as Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as Sina, Rena Owen as Gramma Tala, and Jemaine Clement as Tamatoa—have delivered tremendous performances, as we have witnessed on screen.

If you have already seen the animated version, this movie is a shot-for-shot copy, so you might find the live-action film a bit tedious; however, if you haven’t seen the animated version, this film is a gem that ensures a great two hours of entertainment.
