The excellent DC Universe web series Lanterns from HBO Max has just released its fifth episode. Fans of the show have likely already watched it, but if you haven’t, you should definitely check it out after reading this review and overview you are going to love it. Four episodes were already out, and the fifth is now live on HBO Max and Prime Video, waiting for you. Now, let’s dive into our exclusive topic: Lanterns Episode 5 Review: Stunning Secrets Finally Comes Out.

Story of Lanterns: Episode 5

In terms of the narrative, this episode focuses entirely on Hal Jordan and John Stewart. A mystery has been building around Rushville, and Episode 5 further expands upon it. Notably, the show’s creators avoid simply steering the plot toward a standard villain reveal; while several things are indeed disclosed in this episode, the creators aim to offer something fresh, providing answers to the questions that had arisen in our minds. However, what the creators truly intend to showcase will likely be revealed in the upcoming episodes.

As I mentioned, this episode reveals a great many clues. Answers to long-standing questions come to light, and the characters realize that the situation has become far more complicated than they had anticipated. A highlight of this episode is the engaging investigative aspect; the show shifts into detective mode, transcending the typical superhero identity narrative. Episode 5 turned out to be nothing like I had expected; it is fast-paced and succeeds in propelling the show into an intense new gear.

A look at Hal Jordan and John Stewart.

The highlight of Episode 5 is that it fully resolves the mystery; yet, one gets the feeling that the mystery is about to intensify even further, given that three episodes still remain.

Regarding the relationship between Hal and John: while we saw a good dynamic in Episode 4, a sense of competition between the two was still evident. Hal Jordan is the experienced veteran, whereas John Stewart despite his talent is still a trainee. The main issue is that they do not yet fully trust each other. Episode 5 specifically showcases the conflict between them though I won’t go into the details, as that would be a major spoiler for you.

In Episode 5, we see that Hal Jordan still comes across as arrogant an attitude clearly rooted in his insecurities regarding the Lantern ring. Meanwhile, John Stewart is repeatedly forced to prove his worthiness, even though he knows he possesses the potential to wield the ring. Their conversations reveal a power struggle between the two over the Lantern ring.

The Manhunter Mystery

When discussing the show’s most significant mystery the Manhunter plotline I won’t delve into the specifics, as doing so would result in spoilers, and I certainly don’t want to ruin the experience for you. However, I can say that Episode 5 marks a major turning point for this mystery. The episode attempts to fully address the various small clues introduced in Episode 4.

If there is one aspect worth highlighting in detail, it is the creators’ approach: they are prioritizing suspense within the narrative over mere superhero action a choice I personally really appreciated. We get a distinct sense that something is unfolding around the characters something we don’t yet fully grasp. It is precisely this feeling that makes Episode 5 so compelling and elevates the overall viewing experience.

How is the action in Episode 5?

Overall, the action in this episode is excellent; while I won’t go into minute details, there are a few things I’d like to highlight. Although the show features action, it doesn’t primarily focus on it. Instead, action is used effectively to drive the narrative forward an approach that is truly commendable.

In my view, relying too heavily on CGI battles would weaken the detective elements central to the Lanterns series. The creators seem well aware of this; they keep the action measured while focusing more on the dynamics surrounding the characters. Episode 5 delivers great action while successfully maintaining the atmosphere and character-driven tone of the show.

Final Verdict

If seen, episode 5 is perfect, I will not say so, but if we talk about the makers, the makers have made this show very well, the story has been well developed. We see some scenes succeeding in grouping them well with the story. Overall, episode 5 is a good character driven mystery episode. And this episode does not expand the mythology of Green Lantern at all, instead the relationship between Hal and John is important to us and also episode 5 focuses more on the mystery of the manhunter.

If we talk about episode 6 to 8 of this show, then naturally we will think that now the mystery of manhunter is getting cleared, we get to see it, but what next? Now we will get to see its answer in the upcoming episode for which we are waiting.

My Rating

For me, Episode 5 of the Lanterns show is a strong and impressive installment. The makers have effectively maintained the mystery and tension throughout the story. The chemistry between Hal and John also strengthens the episode. The central focus of the storyline is the Manhunter mystery. Overall, it was a compelling episode that offered a great viewing experience; I am giving Episode 5 a rating of 4/5.
